Who Is Meghan Trainor Talking To?

Is Meghan Trainor really talking to her boyfriend in the song?

Is Meghan Trainor really talking to her boyfriend in the song?

At first when I heard Meghan Trainor’s song “Lips Are Moving” I thought,
“Oh boy this sounds just like “All About That Bass”
Then I heard the song and wondered just who the heck is she talking to?
Because it doesn’t sound like she is talking to a boyfriend, at least to me.
More like a co-worker or even a boss.
I know you’re lyin’
Cause your lips are movin’
Tell me do you think I’m dumb?
I might be young, but I ain’t stupid
Talking around in circles with your tongue

She is calling out the producer or agent or whoever it is that she was working with that was lying to her.
That person thought because of her age, that they could fool her.
She is telling them she isn’t as dumb as they think.
I gave you bass, You gave me sweet talk
Saying how I’m your number one

She gave them the hit song “All About That Bass” and they promised her she’d be their number one, as in number one choice as a musician.
But I know you lie
Cause your lips are movin
Baby don’t you know I’m done?

As in she is done with the negotiations.
Boy, look at me in my face
Tell me that you’re not just about this bass
You really think I could be replaced

She is telling them that she isn’t going to be a one-hit wonder.
They thought she could be replaced by another musician.
Nah, I come from outer space
And I’m a classy girl, I’ma hold it up
You’re full of something but it ain’t love
And what we got, straight overdue
Go find somebody new

She is saying that she won’t do what they want her to do, something that is low and classless.
Also she is calling them out that they do not love her and that her success is overdue.
The she tells them to find another person.
Hey baby don’t you bring them tears
Cause it’s too late, too late baby
You only love me when you’re here
You’re so two-faced, two-faced babe

She is saying that she thinks that they are full of it.
And that they shouldn’t cry because she is done with the negotiations anyway.
You can buy me diamond earrings and deny-ny-ny, ny-ny-ny, deny-ny
But I smell her on your collar so goodbye-bye-bye, bye-bye-bye

They will try to keep her happy with gifts.
Deny as in, deny there is any problem with the negotiations.
And the girl on the collar is the next musician they have found to replace her.
This song may be about her dealing with a cheating boyfriend.
But it seems that this song also fits with Trainor dealing with someone in the industry.

Diamonds are a great way to make an upset person happy.
